Games for vo users on the mac

Here is the beginning of a page I'm in the process of creating to give accessible games for the mac for those of us using voiceover. Softcon will have games posted here of it's own shortly, but there will be freeware and gpl programs here as well once we've determined how well they work with voiceover, and made any required modifications to get them to behave if necessary.

The first game we're posting here is a z5 interpreter called zip.
This is the one I liked best when I used dos/linux to play my infocom games, so here it is for the mac. zip is a barebones interpreter, but it does the job nicely.

jzip is another interpreter that can handle z5 games, though this one appears to work worse with vo than zip does. (I'll dig around in the source to see if I can figure out why) But, at any rate, here it is.

If you'd like a program that's fully integrated into the mac gui, then check out zoom at http://ftp.funet.fi/pub/misc/ifarchive/infocom/interpreters/zoom/

It works with Zcode games, but although it claims to work with tads and other formats, I've had no luck getting these games to work properly. Perhaps someone else who has gotten it to behave could let us know how to do so.

Muddle is a mud client, it doesn't have a lot of features, but it does do basic automatic replies to received text, aliases, site specific macros, and more.
I used this nder linux, and liked it, so compiled it here for osx. It's a terminal app, and this is the universal version, so enjoy.

world.zip
is a text adventure game with a scifi setting. Code has been modified to work on mac os as well, and is included in the archive.

Battle Star is a text adventure that takes place on the battlestar galactica. Your first task is to grab as much loot as you can, and get off the ship before it blows up. There's a limited amount of moves for this to happen, so you're likely to need several tries before you get it right. This game works well with voiceover under leopard in terminal mode, speaking all the prompts and not skipping while reading screen output.

hotel is a game of strategy. In this game, you need to take over the largest portion of the playing grid with the most hotels, shares split, and stocks are combined to gain money. The player with the most at the end wins.

Paranoia is a text game, where you need to solve the mystery of the master retailer, and bring him to justice (or maybe not)

Omega is a game in the style of nethack/rogue. Explore the world, gain treasure, and more.
This one is a bit difficult to use with voiceover, but it does work, just be persistent, but if you like nethack, or exploration games, this one should appeal to you.

Puzzle 15 is a 4-by-4 grid with the numbers 1 to 15, and a blank space. You need to arrange the numbers in the proper order to win the game.

Wanderer is a game vo users will likely need sighted assistance to play, because of it's screen oriented layout approach.
It's similar to rogue or nethack in it's movement/screen design, but it only gives you 1000 moves, and actually, to be honest, I'm not sure what the ultimate goal is, but it is fun to play with friends (or if you like that sort of game.

Greed If anyone knows what the heck this is, let me know.

Shuffle the numbers to get them in the right order

Life< is the (dare we say it) classic game of life, with life forms represented by patterns on the screen. Not much good for vo users I'm afraid, but it did compile cleanly from usenet sources, so I thought I'd include it here anyway.
Enjoy

PThe card game Choice I have no idea how to play this game, so no clue if it's a decent player or not.
Hope someone finds it useful though.

tttt version 2 is a version of tic-tac-toe that uses a 4x4 grid, and allows winning via wrap-around (so you can get four in a row via diagonals, and across corners, I.E. d4 wraps to a1 for the win)

allows practicing of bridge bidding Since I don't play bridge, I have no clue how effective this program is, but here it is anyway. Enjoy

Potion is a game where you need to discover the goal of the game as you play, then go solve the puzzles to win.
Be aware this one is a bit limited in it's parsing capabilities, so don't expect too much, but it is amusing to some degree, and does have a good story, even if it's not flushed out enough.

Chimaera is a text adventure game (don't know much about it, so when someone solves it, write up a review and I'll post it here).

Dinkum is a game that takes place in the australian outback, (haven't played it through, so not sure what the goal is).

Haunted Mansion mystery or treasure hunting.

The game of thoria Another text adventure, not sure it's goal.
